ULTIMATE TARIFA TRAVEL TIPS: YOUR GUIDE TO SPAIN'S WINDY PARADISE

Nestled at the southernmost tip of Spain, where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean, lies the charming town of Tarifa. Known for its strong winds, pristine beaches, and vibrant history, Tarifa is a hidden gem that completely surprised me - it has something for everyone, and I couldn’t recommend it enough! Here are my top tips for a holiday in Tarifa.

A Wind Lover's Paradise

So, why did I even end up in Tarifa? I had actually heard of it a few years back as it is located super close to the ferry point I used when driving my van from Spain to Morocco, and it had a reputation as being great for vanlifers, but I ended up opting to camp out in El Palmar, which is an hour from Tarifa and has a nice little surf break. This time though I did end up in Tarifa, sans my van, but with my best friend who has just moved here. She is a kite surfer, which brings me onto the first point to make about this little town - it is renowned as one of the world's top destinations for wind sports!

Thanks to the powerful Levante [readers of the Alchemist will recognise that name] and Poniente winds, the town has become a mecca for kitesurfers and windsurfers as the consistent winds create perfect conditions for both beginners and seasoned pros. The town is full of kite surfing shops and schools, and the skies are dotted with colourful kites dancing against the backdrop of clear blue skies. It is a place for pros to practice, for beginners to learn, or for people like me who just wanted to relax on the beached and watch in awe as the pros practically fly over the ocean!

Beaches Galore

Beyond the wind sports, Tarifa boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Spain. I was completely surprised by how white the sand and how turquoise the water was in this part of Spain - the beaches are just stunning.

Playa de Bolonia is a must-visit - it is an unspoiled beach about 30 minute drive from Tarifa, and is famous for its expansive sand dunes and the ancient Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia. There are also some hidden natural pools to the left-hand side of the beach which are supposed to be stunning, so definitely one to add to your bucket list.

Another amazing beach is Playa de Valdevaqueros - which offers stunning views of the Moroccan coast. It's a little more secluded than Bolonia too, so is an ideal spot for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy some peace and tranquility too. Valdevaqueros Beach Bar [where the Liam Waller kite surfing school is] is a great little spot to chill for the day - offering panaromaic views of the ocean and kite surfers, whilst also providing fresh drinks and tasty snacks.

And whilst we are talking of beaches - a lot of the beach side cafes and restaurants offer incredible food, views and a great sunset atmosphere. In particular try Balneario and Waikiki on Tarifa beach, and on route to beaches outside of Tarifa stop in to Hurricane Hotel [they do a yummy buffet lunch in their restaurant] or Powerhouse Duotone for a bite to eat.

Nature and Wildlife

Ultimate Travel Guide to Tarifa, Spain

A sperm whale dives just metres from our boat on a whale watching trip

Tarifa's natural beauty extends beyond its beaches - the landscape behind is beautiful, and fantastic for hiking. The nearby Los Alcornocales Natural Park is a haven for nature lovers, and is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including the rare Spanish fir. Hiking and bird-watching are popular activities here, with trails that offer stunning views of the surrounding landscapes - I recommend the La Pena hike and Buddha trail - both take you up into the Spanish mountains past the farms, and the views over Tarifa are to die for.

The Strait of Gibraltar is also a prime location for whale and dolphin watching. Several tour operators in Tarifa offer boat trips that allow you to see these magnificent creatures up close - I was lucky enough to see pilot whales, sperm whales, and dolphins! And with Morocco as the back drop. It was incredible.

Rich History and Culture

Tarifa also boasts lots of history as it’s strategic location has made it a cultural melting pot over the centuries. The well-preserved Guzmán Castle, built in 960 AD, stands as a testament to Tarifa's rich past, and offers panoramic views of the town and the Strait of Gibraltar - walking through its ancient halls feels like stepping back in time.

The old town of Tarifa is also gorgeous - during the day or at night. The white-washed buildings, colourful flower pots, and charming cafes and tapas bars makes it the perfect place to sample local cuisine and soaking up the Andalusian atmosphere. it also boasts some incredible shops, with local artisan things on offer. And I couldn’t not mention the bars… The old town is also home to lots of fun places to party - so if you’re looking for a fun night out, Tarifa definitely has it - especially in the peak season over summer.

Here are some of my favourite spots in the old town:

  • Bonjour Tarifa - a great little breakfast place [the acai bowl absolutely slapped!]

  • El otro Melli - tasty tapas, located in a cute courtyard in the old town

  • Pescado de Tarifa - fish restaurant near Tarifa Port [I’ve been dreaming about the seafood spaghetti!]

  • El Lola - tapas and drinks

  • El Patio hotel, restaurant and bar, located infront of Tarifa Port

Gateway to Africa

One of Tarifa's unique attractions is its proximity to Africa. Just 14 kilometers across the Strait of Gibraltar lies the Moroccan city of Tangier. Day trips to Tangier are popular among visitors, offering a taste of a different continent and culture. Ferries run regularly, making it easy to hop over for a day of exploration.

Tarifa is a town that captivates with its natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. Whether you're riding the waves, exploring ancient ruins, or simply relaxing on a pristine beach, Tarifa offers an unforgettable experience. Pack your bags, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready to fall in love with Tarifa—the windy jewel of Spain.
