THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO CAMPING ESSENTIALS: A PACKING LIST

If you follow my socials you know I am obsessed with camping - stripping it all back and living simply is one of my favourite ways to decompress, escape the hustle and bustle, and reset my mindset. But it isn’t for everyone! My mission is to convert even the most wary of campers, and to do that there are definitely ways to make the experience easier and more enjoyable - starting with making sure you have all the right kit! In this article I provide you with the ultimate packing list for a camping adventure.

I would consider myself a seasoned camper - I lived in a van for nearly three years, and even now I camp in my car, so I have been perfecting my camping kit for a long time. Transitioning from a fully equipped self-converted van to a car has been challenging, and now more than ever do I understand the importance of planning and preparation. But once you have your camping essentials organised, you are good to go each time you set off on a camping adventure!

So, let’s dive in. Whether you're a seasoned camper or a beginner, this guide will help you cover all the essential items you'll need for a successful camping trip.

1. Shelter and Sleeping Gear

Whatever you do, don’t forget your bed set up! Whether it is a fully converted van, micro camper, car booting, or tent, bring comfortable and cosy bedding! I always have a mattress protector and soft sheet, as well as duvet and pillows [instead of sleeping bag] as I just sleep way better this way - I guess it feels more like your own bed. And don’t forget extra blankets - if you are camping in the UK, it’s likely to be chilly in the evenings.

If you are in a micro-camper, don’t forget the black out blinds!

2. Cooking and Food Supplies

  • Camp Stove and Fuel: A portable camp stove is essential for cooking meals or for your morning cuppa! Bring spare gas, and don’t forget the kettle.

  • BBQ: This BBQ is my favourite - it is perfect to carry down to the beach, or just use at the campsite. Don’t forget the burn in a bag coal and a lighter.

  • Cookware: Pack lightweight pots, pans, and utensils that are designed for camping, and plates, bowls, mugs, and cutlery. Oh, and don’t forget a can opener and bottle opener!

  • Food and Drink: I usually have a dry bag for food and drink, and then a cooler for the perishable ones [like milk, meats and cheese]. You want to make easy meals when camping, to minimise the need for lots of ingredients and lots of washing up. Don’t forget the marshmellows and sticks for making s’mores around the fire!

  • Cooler: If you’re bringing perishable food, a good cooler will keep items fresh. Be sure to pack ice or ice packs to maintain the temperature. I love this one from Igloo on wheels!

  • Cleanup Supplies: Bring a collapsable washing up bowl [to easily carry your washing up to and from the campsite washing up area], and don’t forget the biodegradable soap, a sponge, and a small towel for drying dishes.

  • Camping Table: This foldable one stores away neatly, so doesn’t take up loads of room, and is great for preparing food, or even eating food at.

3. Clothing and Personal Items

It depends where you are camping and what activities you are doing, but pack weather-appropriate clothing, including warm clothes for evenings around the fire. Pack a warm hat, and extra socks! I’d also throw in your waterproofs, just incase. Don’t forget pjs for bed, and all your toiletries too. If you are staying in a campsite you will most likely have access to showers, so bring shower gel, a towel, shampoo and conditioner, and of course your toothbrush and toothpaste. If you wild camp, I’d chuck in some baby wipes too! [and have a rubbish bag on hand for the dirty ones].

4. Miscellaneous Essentials

  • Fire Pit: I love this fire pit as it keeps the fire off the ground, and you can pack it away as soon as the fire is out .Don’t forget wood and kindling too!

  • Fire Starting Kit: Matches in a waterproof container, a lighter, and fire starters will help you get a campfire going.

  • Sunscreen and Bug Spray: Protect yourself from sunburn and insect bites. Choose products that are effective and safe for outdoor use.

  • Trash Bags: Leave no trace by packing out all your trash. Bring extra bags for recycling and waste separation if needed.

  • Camping Chair: A lightweight, portable chair adds comfort to your campsite and makes relaxing around the campfire more enjoyable.

  • Portable Power Bank: If you’ll need to charge devices, a portable power bank can be a lifesaver. Make sure it’s fully charged before you leave!

Final Tips

  • Check the Weather: Always check the weather forecast before you leave to pack accordingly.

  • Leave No Trace: Follow the Leave No Trace principles to minimize your impact on the environment and preserve nature for future campers.

  • Know the Rules: Familiarize yourself with local camping regulations and park rules to ensure a smooth and compliant experience.

With these camping essentials packed and ready, you’re well on your way to having an unforgettable outdoor adventure. Happy camping!
