EXPLORING THE HIDDEN GEM OF DEVON: SPEKES MILL WATERFALL

Choosing the "best" waterfall in England can be subjective as of course it depends on personal preferences, but Spekes Mill waterfall in Devon has to be high up on the list, and I have been lucky enough to visit it twice on my travels around the UK. Nestled on the rugged Hartland Peninsula, the waterfall offers so much more than just cascading water. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs, stunning ocean views, and lush countryside, it is a hidden gem waiting to be explored, and rivals some of the stunning waterfalls I’ve seen in places like Indonesia!

A Secluded Paradise

Spekes Mill Waterfall is a hidden gem, often overlooked in favour of more popular tourist spots, making it an ideal location for those who appreciate solitude and the unspoiled beauty of nature - you might even get the chance to take a naked wild swim in one of the pools, without peeping eyes! The waterfall plunges approximately 48 feet down a steep cliff face into a serene pool before flowing towards the Atlantic Ocean. And if there is plenty of water flow, there are other pools further down to take a dip in. The sight is breathtaking, especially after a period of rain when the waterfall is at its most powerful.

As you approach the waterfall, the landscape opens up to reveal panoramic views of the coastline. The contrast between the lush green fields, the dark slate cliffs, and the vibrant blue sea creates the most perfect backdrop - so make sure you pack a picnic and find a spot to sit and take in the peaceful surroundings. And don’t forget to leave the area as you found it - Spekes Mill Waterfall is a pristine natural site, so take care to leave no trace. Carry out all litter and avoid disturbing the local wildlife.

Getting There

Located near Hartland - a charming village with traditional cottages, local pubs and quaint craft shops, the waterfall can be found by a short hike on the south coast path from Hartland Quay. Park in the first level of the car park - this is where the south coast path starts, and the walk is roughly 1.5 miles. It can be challenging in parts, with steep sections and uneven terrain, so wear appropriate footwear.

Spekes Mill Waterfall is a testament to the natural beauty of Devon's coastline. Its secluded location and breathtaking scenery make it a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the raw and untouched beauty of the English countryside. Whether you're a seasoned hiker, a photography enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates the great outdoors, a visit to Spekes Mill Waterfall is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories and a longing to return.
