DATE IDEAS: THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN NEWQUAY FOR COUPLES

Newquay in Cornwall is where I now call home, and it’s a hugely popular travel destination. With its stunning beaches, great surf, and chilled out vibe, it’s the perfect place to escape to, and for a romantic date! In this article I share my top ten things to do in Newquay for couples.

Newquay is a town located on the north coast of Cornwall, and it can be mistaken for just being a great place for a night out - it has had a reputation for being a destination for stag and hen do’s, and I must admit I did visit Newquay in my teens - and it wasn’t as wholesome as I spend my weekends in Newquay now! Don’t get me wrong, it still has great nightlife, with the classic Sailors and Berties bars still open, but there is so much more to Newquay than pubs and bars. Here are my top ten things to do in Newquay, date edition.

Newquay is made up of different areas, including Crantock, Fistral, the town centre, Porth and Watergate Bay, and has 7 miles of beautiful sandy beaches stretching along these areas. There is so much to fill your time in Newquay, but here are my favourite things to do:

  1. Grab brunch and coffee at a vibey cafe. There are so many cool little quirky cafes in Newquay - Fore Street Cafe, MILK, REMs, Nalu, SeaSpray, The Hangout at Watergate, and Basket are some of my favourites.

  2. Head to the beach! In the warmer weather take a picnic or BBQ, or in the colder months grab a take away coffee and go for a beach stroll. There are 7 beaches in Newquay to choose from, and all of them are beautiful. Fistral Beach, Towan Beach, Great Western Beach, Tolcarne Beach, Lusty Glaze Beach, Porth Beach, and Watergate Bay.

  3. Wild swim! Didn’t you hear - cold water plunges are great for you, and what better what to do it than in the ocean! There are lots of places to wild swim - you can just plunge into the shoreline at one of the many beaches, but if the surf is big try some more shelted spots like The Gannel. The Gannel is the river that runs into Crantock beach, and on a sunny day it is sparkles! The gorgeous turquoise water can be reached by parking at Pentire Hradland, and following the footpath down to the Gannel beach, or by walking along Crantock beach.

  4. Surf of course. Newquay is England’s surfing mecca, and with so many beaches and surf breaks to choose from, there’s something from everyone. If you need to rent a board or have some lessons, there are plenty of surf schools to choose from too. If you are new to surfing, just make sure you familaise yourself with the tides so you don’t get caught out in the rips and currents! Its important to educate yourself about the ocean and to be safe.

  5. Go for a coastal walk! There are so many to choose from, but my faves are from PolyJoke to Hollywell, Porth beach to Watergate, and around Pentire Headland. You might even spot some seals playing in the water or chilling on the beach.

  6. Try an outdoor activity. There are plenty to choose from, including coasteering, jet-skiing, speed boat rides to spot dolphins and whales, and renting paddleboards and kayaks. This is such a great date idea - pack a sandwich and drink, head out on the kayaks, and see Newquay by water!

  7. Drinks & pop up food at The Boathouse. If you fancy a little day drinking session, head down to Newquay Harbour where you will find pop up food trucks, cocktails, and a bar right on the harbour beach.

  8. Spa it up! Treat yourselves to a sauna and swim at The Headland hotel Aqua Club - I love the sunrise session, as you get two hours in the spa, followed by a three course breakie! There are also plenty of other spas in Newquay including The Scarlett Hotel, or cheaper options, including the sauna at Fistral beach and the new Nordic Spa near ASDA.

  9. Rent a Beryl Bike and cycle around Newquay, making a pit stop at Trenance Gardens and the boating lake - you can ecen hire a pedalo here.

  10. Try an activity like pottery at Wedge Studio, or a yoga class at Shiva, followed by a yummy lunch in their cafe afterwards.

And there you have it! There is so much to see and do in Newquay, and most are free - soak up the incredible views, stunning beaches, and gorgeous Cornish coastline - it doesn’t get much more romantic than that.
