VAN ADVENTURES IN WALES
Newgale Camping
Although I was only in Wales for a week, I was blown away by the beauty of the Pembrokeshire coastline. It reminded me a lot of Cornwall. Although the weather was a little chillier, Pembrokehsire was a lot quieter than Cornwall and had more campsites near the coast and beaches, so it did a good job of rivalling my fave place in the UK.
Below are some of my top recommendations:
FRESHWATER WEST
Freshwater has everything - gorgeous sandy beach, good surf, and parking along the road so you have ocean views from the van! You aren’t allowed to stay overnight, but Newton Farm is a 3 minute drive away at the top of the hill and is only £10 a night, including all facilities. Run by a local farmer, he lets you park wherever, and it’s a very relaxed stay - I left at 1pm as was working from the van for the morning.
Top tip: you’ll need a 50p for the shower, and I recommend taking at least two - yup I got caught out with shampoo still in my hair!
NEWGALE
A 40 minute drive from Freshwater is Newgale Beach - a pebbly beach with great surf. I stayed at Newgale Campsite which is right on the beach, and the sun set there was one of the best in I saw in Wales. And at just £8 per night including facilities it is a must stay! FYI - for this shower you will need a £1 coin which will give you a 10 minute shower.
ST DAVIDS and FISHGUARD
Because my trip was only a week long, I drove through both St Davids and Fishguard quite quickly, but if you have some time I would recommend stopping and taking in the sights. St Davids is a cute little town - perfect for grabbing a coffee and having a mooch. Fishguard is another beautiful old fishing town with boats moored up in the harbour. Both are very picturesque!
ABEREIDDY
Whitesands beach is beautiful, so would def recommend a day at the beach there, or a surf! There is a campsite on the beach here but it’s quite small - so although a great location I felt a bit squished in like sardines. I ended up driving on towards the Blue Lagoon [which is a must visit!] and found a campsite on route called Ecocaerhyscamping - a gorgeous campsite on the top of the hill overlooking the ocean run by a lovely Welsh family!
Ecocaerhys Camping
£4 for the day to park on Newport Beach!
NEWPORT
Newport Beach is another stunning beach, and you can literally drive onto the beach to park there! The tides have to be right, but for the entire day it is just £4! I got great signal there too, so that was my office for the day. There is a little cafe on the beach next to the normal car park which did great coffee, and.. wait for it… Biscoff ice cream! Highly recommend a day here.
CARDIGAN
After spending the day at Newport Beach, I ended up driving on to Cardigan and staying at the Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park, it was quite family vibes [they have a wildlife park on the site], but there is a stunning walk along the coast to see the seals that live in the rocks below! So, if you want to see seals and maybe dolphins, its a nice spot.
Hope you find these tips helpful! I will definitely be going back to Wales to explore more of the North, and I can safely say I will be going back to beautiful Pembrokeshire!
